Paete, Laguna. The place conjures images of skilled woodcarvers whose works of art have earned for its artists fame and recognition not only in the local art scene but also abroad. The skillfully executed and intricately-designed wood sculpture of religious images and other woodcraft depicting local scenes and color is a thriving cottage industry in this place which has became well known for its artists and their art. But Paete is also home to yet another cottage industry, a different kind of art – the art of Papier Mache.
Hiyas Handicraft (*formerly Nelda’s Handicraft*), is one of the largest Papier Mache-making business in Paete, it is owned and managed by spouses Rojilyn Q. Bagabaldo and Nelda D. Baldemor.
For a number of art-inclined people in Paete, it takes paper, cooked rice, rugby and the sun to earn a decent living. These are the materials they use for the art which found a thriving place and eventually a home in Paete - - - papier mache.
